The Liminal Space Mystery Comes to Life
This time, I’m reviewing a movie adapted from one of the internet's most legendary creepypastas: the Backrooms.
Overall, I am giving it a 7/10. Honestly, I didn't set my expectations too high from the start, so I wasn't disappointed at all after watching it. Let's break down how this movie executes such an incredibly weird world!
🟨 1. Abstract and Creepy World Execution
We all know how famous the Backrooms is on the internet: an endless maze of empty, dimly lit rooms with no signs of life and distorted architecture that feels deeply unsettling. Not to mention the presence of bizarre entities that endlessly chase you, making it feel like a terrifying survival game.
For me, the movie's premise is fascinating and executed surprisingly well! I was absolutely mesmerized by the interior design of the Backrooms itself. The atmosphere genuinely feels like a wild room of imagination because its shapes are so abstract. The entities are also depicted to be extremely weird and successfully gave me the chills. The visual depiction of the Backrooms in this film definitely deserves a thumbs up.
🌌 2. Atmospheric and Cosmic Horror Vibes
The concept of horror presented here is not the type that relies on cheap jumpscares, but rather pure atmospheric horror. Personally, I absolutely love this kind of horror because it is often much more relatable to our real-life fears.
A combination of cosmic horror (the fear of the vast unknown) and psychological human horror is my absolute favorite genre. This movie successfully executes these elements brilliantly, proving that a film can be deeply terrifying without bombarding you with jumpscares every five minutes.
⏳ 3. A Rather Slow Tempo
One of the movie's main flaws is its slow pacing. However, I think this is completely understandable. Rather than rushing to uncover the deep "mystery" behind the Backrooms, the movie focuses more on introducing what the Backrooms actually is to general audiences.
🚪 4. A Cliffhanger with Massive Potential
The movie does a great job portraying the concept of "levels" and the endless depth of the Backrooms, giving us a clear hint that this is merely the beginning.
We are even introduced to other humans trapped inside who have been researching the anomaly. This serves as a highly intriguing cliffhanger: if there is a sequel, the exploration will undoubtedly go much deeper, and the entities will become far more numerous and dangerous.
🎬 Conclusion
While this feature film is quite satisfying as an introduction, considering how vast and deep the lore of this liminal space is, I actually feel that the Backrooms concept would be much better suited as a TV series rather than a two-hour theatrical movie.
