Great CGI but a Confusing Story

Colossal Banner

This time around, I want to talk about a movie with a pretty unique concept: Colossal. To be honest, this movie left me with very mixed feelings.

Overall, I can only give it a score of 5/10. Why? Because even though there are aspects I truly enjoyed, the storyline just left me shaking my head. Let's break it down!

🤷‍♀️ 1. A Slow and Directionless Plot

Story-wise, this movie really lacks a clear direction of where it wants to go. The pacing feels extremely slow and somewhat awkward.

On top of that, the fiction element is just... too fictional. What I mean is, a lot of it completely defies logic and makes zero sense. Sometimes it leaves you wondering, "Wait, how does that even work?"

👾 2. Awesome and Entertaining Monster CGI

Fortunately, the visual aspect of the movie manages to save it. The monster CGI is absolutely top-notch!

This is what makes the movie still pretty fun to watch. When else do you get to see a monster whose movements are actually entertaining and somewhat goofy? It's completely different from the stiff, terrifying kaijus you'd see in something like Pacific Rim. The monster here has its own comedic charm.

❤️ 3. Emotional Tension, Friendship, and a Touch of Love

Now, the real plus point in this absurd story is its quite satisfying ending.

The emotional tension and friendship between the two main characters truly become the focal point of the movie. I really loved how the tension between them was built up. Of course, you can definitely feel that "love" plays a huge, inevitable factor in their dynamic. The strong emotions towards the end at least make up for the slower parts of the movie.

🎬 Conclusion

Colossal is a movie with a brilliant idea and entertaining monster CGI, but sadly executed with a sluggish pace and an illogical plot.

For those of you looking for a light watch just to see an entertaining monster paired with emotional relationship drama, this movie is still decent enough for your free time.

Final Score: 5/10 ⭐️

What do you guys think? Are you the type who can tolerate an illogical story just for some fun monster antics?
