🦸♂️ The Boys Series Finale Review
The End of the King Meme Era, But Feels Rushed
Finally, the long, crazy, and blood-filled journey of The Boys over the past 7 years has reached its peak. Considering today was quite exhausting both physically and mentally, I was hoping this final episode would be a comforting cure. Unfortunately (because my diary server is currently down), I'll be sharing my raw review right here.
Honestly? The ending was just "meh"! Very disappointing. Let's dig deeper into why this climax felt lacking in punch, even though there were a few moments that could still be enjoyed. Overall, I can only give it a score of 6/10.
🚶♂️ 1. "Meh" Ending, Not Chaotic Enough, and Wasted Potential
As a climax to a series known for its sheer madness over 7 years, this ending truly did not reflect the "blood and bone" essence typical of The Boys.
I was hoping the final battle would be absolutely chaotic and destructive. The reality? The main fight only happened indoors! It felt more like a cliffhanger with a ton of wasted potential rather than an epic climax. If the resolution was going to be this simple, why did we even need 8 episodes? It could have easily ended in season 4. Even the presence of Gen V, which was only used to introduce a virus, ultimately felt useless and pointless.
💉 2. Homelander's Death: Too Easy
One of the most disappointing points was how Homelander lost. The power of this god-like figure was merely removed by Kimiko!
In my opinion, it would have been much more thrilling and tense if Kimiko's experiment was shown to fail, or at least only succeeded right when they were desperately cornered fighting Homelander. Even though it might seem like plot armor and easily predictable, it would have been much more satisfying as a plot twist compared to the current execution.
🗑️ 3. Most Satisfying: Butcher Trashing Homelander!
Despite the many disappointments, there was one thing that made me very satisfied: seeing Homelander completely trashed and humiliated by Butcher in front of all of America!
Out of all the flaws in this episode, this moment was the best part. Sadly, it was the only golden moment; the rest was just meh.
Oh, and about Butcher, his motivation to rebel really reminded me of John Wick. The death of his dog (Terror) seemingly acted as the main trigger for him to orchestrate this coup. Very personal and radical.
📖 4. Following the Comic Ending (With a Slight Difference)
In the end, the series chose to follow the ending of the comic version. The main difference is just one: in the series version, all the characters are still alive except for Butcher and Frenchie. A conclusion that makes sense, but again, the execution lacked bite.
👑 5. The End of the Homelander "King Meme" Era
One sad thing outside of the story is the end of the Homelander meme era. Antony Starr's face, which has dominated the internet's meme templates for so long, will slowly be replaced. Nevertheless, the impact of this character on meme creators is truly extraordinary and deserves appreciation. Big respect to Antony Starr and the rest of the cast who have accompanied us for 7 years.
🚪 6. "Daddy's Home!" and The Remaining Disappointment
Even though I was disappointed overall, the moment Butcher entered with the line "Daddy's home" still successfully built up the hype to its maximum. It was one of the few fan-service moments that was executed exceptionally well.
I was so frustrated with The Boys ending that I ended up yapping endlessly on Discord discussing every single flaw with my friends. We both agreed that a series with this much potential deserved a far grander conclusion that didn't feel so rushed.
Final Score: 6/10
For those of you who watched it together in theaters yesterday... you must be heavily disappointed too, right?
